Health Goals

Silybum marianum, commonly known as milk thistle, is most popular for its hepatoprotective benefits. Milk thistle is a flowering herb whose seeds contain a group of bioactive flavonolignans collectively called silymarin. Within silymarin, silybin is considered the most pharmacologically active and most studied for liver and cellular protection.

Silybin supports liver health through a number of avenues, but mainly by reducing oxidative stress and calming inflammation. Mechanistically, silybin helps boost the liver’s own antioxidant defenses by upregulating glutathione levels and reducing damage from reactive molecules produced by alcohol, fat buildup or toxins. At the same time, silbynin inhibits NF-κB and downregulates COX-2, both key players in the pro-inflammatory cascade that can worsen liver injury.

These hepatoprotective actions of silybin have been shown to lower liver enzymes like ALT and AST in human studies, thereby signaling that liver cells are under less stress. Some research also suggests that silybin may slow the progression of liver scarring and fibrosis by reducing hepatic stellate cell activation. Unfortunately, silybin is well-known to suffer from poor bioavailability on its own.

Cyto-Matrix Milk Thistle harnesses all of the health benefits of silybin, yet delivers them in a unique phytosomal complex bound to phosphatidylcholine known as Siliphos®. This phytosomal complex protects silybin from degradation and facilitates its passage through cell membranes, leading to improved stability and bioavailability into liver tissue.

Specifically, pharmacokinetic studies for Siliphos® have demonstrated a 3-4x improvement in bioavailability (as per area under the curve; AUC) and 2-3x for peak blood levels (as per Cmax) when compared to standard milk thistle and silymarin extracts. This enhanced absorption translates into stronger clinical efficacy at significantly lower doses, particularly for liver protection and detoxification support. Each bottle of Cyto-Matrix Milk Thistle contains 90 vegetable capsules.
