Of these herbal extracts, Echinacea angustifolia is the best-known for immune support, with numerous research trials showing that it can significantly reduce the recurrence of the common cold and reduce the duration of symptoms in an active infection. Baptisia tinctoria, commonly known as wild indigo, has also been shown to significantly reduce the intensity and duration of acute upper respiratory symptoms.
Hydrastis sinensis, better known as goldenseal, is indicated for catarrhal states as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial and a tonic for the respiratory tract. These actions are achieved through the powerful alkaloids, berberine and hydrastine. Astragalus membranaceus and its active ingredients are paired nicely with goldenseal because of its demonstrated effectiveness for controlling symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis. Astragalus membranaceus acts as an immunomodulating agent that upregulates immune cell expression, specifically CD4 and CD8 T cells, various cytokines and macrophages.
The traditional herbs Schisandra fructus and Ligusticum willichia round out the formula. Schisandra fructus is classically used as an adaptogen with liver protectant effects, but it also has anti-tussive and expectorant actions that are beneficial in upper respiratory infections.
